Why We Are Asking For Your Tax Return

Over the coming months, you may hear from our team about a request for a copy of your most recent tax return. We want to take a moment to explain why we are asking and, more importantly, how this benefits you.

The easiest way to think about this is the difference between tax preparation and tax planning. Your accountant handles tax preparation. That work focuses on accurately reporting what has already happened and ensuring your return is filed correctly. By the time that process is complete, the year is closed.

Our role is different. We focus on tax planning, which is about what to do next.

Your tax return gives us a clear and complete picture of your financial life in a way that no other document can. It shows how your income is structured, how your investments are being taxed, what deductions you are taking, and where you may be nearing important thresholds. Without it, we are often working from estimates. With it, we are working from facts.

That difference allows for better conversations and better decisions.

When we can review your return, we are able to look ahead with more precision. We can evaluate whether it makes sense to realize gains in a given year or hold off. We can determine if a Roth conversion fits within your current tax picture and how much room you have to do so efficiently. We can identify areas where additional taxes may be triggered and work to manage or avoid them. We can also help ensure that your charitable giving and investment strategy are aligned with your overall tax situation.

These are not one-time decisions. They are ongoing opportunities that, when handled thoughtfully, can improve outcomes over time.

Just as important, having your tax return allows us to better coordinate with your accountant. Instead of working in separate lanes, we are able to operate from the same set of information. That coordination leads to a more consistent and intentional strategy across all aspects of your financial life.

It is important to note that we are not preparing your taxes. We are not replacing your accountant. We are building on that work and using it to guide forward looking advice.

This initiative reflects a broader effort on our part to continue raising the level of planning and advice we deliver. It is a meaningful enhancement to our process and one that allows us to be more proactive and more precise on your behalf. Most importantly, this added level of service is provided to you at no additional cost.

If you have already shared your tax return with us, thank you. If not, we encourage you to consider doing so. It is one of the most impactful ways we can deepen our understanding of your situation and help you make more informed decisions.

As always, please reach out with any questions.
